Better backlinks boost the credibility of your website.

Everyone knows backlinks are a recognized Google ranking factor.

But many people can get it wrong. Not every backlink boosts your site’s performance in Google’s SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

It’s true that quality backlinks can boost your website’s authority and ranking, but poor or low-quality backlinks can have the opposite effect, leading to a lower ranking in Google’s SERPs. So getting it right, right from the start, is critical.

We’re here to help you understand what makes a backlink valuable. We’ll cover a bunch of factors that play a key role in this effort. By educating yourself, you can focus on a link-building strategy that actually benefits your SEO efforts, instead of damaging it.

Or, you can work with us to set up a backlinks program that helps your website play well with Google, and other search engines, like GEO and AEO. Also, you can see a backlinks report for what we have to our website here.

Key Factors that Make Backlinks Valuable and Authoritative

Here are some of the important factors that make backlinks valuable in terms of rankings.

1. Niche, Context, and the Relevance of Your Backlinks

Search engines like Google aim to deliver relevant results to users…right? That’s why they mostly favor backlinks that come from niche-relevant websites.

Relevance acts as a foundation of a valuable backlink. When a relevant site links to your webpage, it sends a positive signal to Google that you are a credible source in that specific industry.

For example, a marketing blog receiving a link from a marketing agency carries more link juice than one that is coming from an unrelated niche, such as gaming or travel.

Apart from the niche, the contextual relevance of the backlink also matters a lot. Now, search crawlers have become advanced enough to analyze the intent of content. So, the link should be added naturally in such a way that it provides value to the reader.

Note: Backlinks that look forced and out of place (even if the site is niche-relevant) may not pass meaningful ranking value.

2. Link Type (Dofollow or Nofollow)

The type of backlink is another critical factor that makes a link valuable. The two types are Dofollow and Nofollow. Both types of backlinks have their own importance and benefits.

  • A “dofollow“ backlink has a key role in improving ranking, which is why they’re preferred. It means Google crawls through the link and count it as a signal of trust/authority. It is essentially a “vote” for the site being linked to. Dofollow links are the ones that pass link juice directly from the linking site to your page. These are considered highly beneficial for SEO because they contribute to boosting visibility in the SERPs.
  • A “nofollow” backlink doesn’t directly pass ranking authority from the linking website (yours). These links are useful for creating a natural backlink profile. Numerous tools available online, such as Ahrefs, can help monitor the link graph/profile of any site.

3. The Domain Authority of the Site that’s Linking to Yours

The domain authority (DA) of the website linking to your page is one indicator used to determine the value of a backlink. It is a third-party metric introduced by Moz. So, it is not a direct Google ranking factor.

It is a score ranging from 0 to 100 that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search engine results. A site with a high DA score is often considered both authoritative and credible within its niche.

Here’s a breakdown of what to look for in domain authority.

  • Above 60 is considered great
  • Above 40 is considered average
  • Below 20 is considered low

The simplest way to calculate domain authority score is through DA PA checker. (The “PA” stands for “Page Authority.”) The Domain Authority measures the how trustworthy, and the overall ranking strength of your entire website is, while Page Authority (PA) assesses the potential for a single, specific page to rank well.

Simply enter the website address, click the calculate button, and review the score.

For context, the average DA ranking for a small web design firm is between 20 and 40.

Keep in mind that linking from a high-DA website that’s unrelated to your business niche may not deliver its full SEO value because of it’s lack of relevance to your site. But a backlink from a relevant site, with moderate domain authority, can definitely be beneficial.

4. Anchor Text Variations

Anchor text is a clickable word or phrase that contains the backlink. It is an essential element that helps search crawlers to understand the topic and intent of the linked webpage.

A valuable link uses a relevant, descriptive, and natural anchor. For example, let’s say your blog is about the creation of an SEO content strategy. Below, we have mentioned both good and bad anchor text.

  • The text for a good anchor would be “SEO-optimized content strategy” because it tells you what you’ll be linking to
  • The text for a bad anchor would be: “Visit the website/click here” because the text doesn’t reflect the page it is linking to

Note: Overusing the same anchor text repeatedly can look unnatural. This practice can trigger Google’s spam algorithms.

It does not matter how well your link is placed on a quality website; if the anchor text is not appropriate, the overall value will be reduced in terms of authority.

We’ll wrap this up with the reminder that not all backlinks are created equal.

Quality ones can significantly boost your site authority and ranking, while spammy links can lead to penalties or reduced visibility. That’s why it is important for you to understand the factors that make a backlink valuable. This will ultimately help you create links that actually support long-term growth.
