BESA Interior Lighting is an older web design of ours, but still one of our favorites.

This website one of the older web designs you’ll find on our website. Typically, one would expect to find only the latest designs in the portfolio of a Web Design Company. And yet, here it is, and we are still proud of it.

From the beautiful photography of their interior lighting, to the custom coded slideshows and carousels. Also, the most complex portion of this website is a behind-the-scenes database and search function that sorts through tons of products to deliver customized search results.

Besa Interior Lighting is primarily a business-to-business company.

BESA collaborates with American designers and European craftsman to merger traditional techniques like hand-blown glass, with cutting edge design for state-of-the-art architectural lighting products.

This website is also responsive, and to understand the importance of a responsive website, know that Google will actually demote your website if it isn’t responsive in a search done on a mobile device. Why would they do that? Simple. Google wants their users to have the best searching experience possible based on the results Google delivers. And a non-responsive website, being viewed on a smart phone, is not a good user experience.

So whenever you’re talking to a Columbus web design firm, or web developer, be sure they’re keeping up on Google’s algorithms. Otherwise, it can hurt your website’s rankings, while your competitors’ might be doing the right things.

Building this website “Mobile First” was at the top of our list.

Obviously now in 2024 every web designer knows to build a mobile version, as well as a desktop version of every site. However, back in 2013 this was just becoming a new requirement in the building process. The task was not to just simply build a separate mobile version, but to build a responsive website that changes its shape, depending on the size of the device it was displayed on.

The best way to achieve this was to build the website starting with the smallest, most simple interface in mind. This concept is called “Mobile First”. The previous method was to design a desktop version of a website and show it to the client. The designing or building any sort of “phone version” would have been an afterthought. Using the mobile first principle, we as website designers would prioritize the users experience on these smaller devices right out the gate, and then we would build up from there.

What we found natural about this (even though it was difficult at first) was, as the devices got bigger—from tablets to laptops, to huge widescreen monitors. The web designs could get more complex; more bells and whistles could be added, when compared to their more stripped down mobile counterparts.

How do we approach a new web design?

You already read about how we build our sites mobile first, so if we’re lucky enough to get your business and design your website. You might want to know how we approach all of this. As with Besa Interior Lighting and all other clients of ours, we always start with an information gathering session.

Once we have a grasp on all your needs, wants, dreams—our next task is to bring them to life! We always start with an offline, static design. We construct an entire homepage in both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. We critique and tweak the design over multiple days, until we are 100% satisfied with the final product.

Once we are happy with the new homepage design, it is time to finally present it to you. We typically will either send you a JPG or PDF of the homepage, or sometimes we will post the JPG on the web, so you can preview it in a browser window. This way you can best imagine what it will look like when it’s live and how it will appear when scrolling.
